This little fiasco over Draco Malfoy is... well, frankly, ridiculous. I feel like they're all thirteen again -- would that they were, and would that the world would just go back to 1993; 'furry little problem' or not, things were easier when they were thirteen. They weren't easier to understand (with the exception of Draco) -- I'd say they were harder, actually, giving allowances for the whole concept of 'grown ups just don't understand' -- their getting older makes them more complex, but it brings our understandings of the world closer together, makes it easier for me to think on their level, etc.

And I wish I could just break them all of calling me 'Professor Lupin' by now. Even George is still doing it. I'll gladly answer to anything but 'Professor Lupin.' Remus. Lupin. Moony. Wolfie. Merlin, even being 'Fuzzy' would be preferable to being 'Professor Lupin.' As if I needed a constant reminder of what I'd rather be doing from the people I used to do it with.

Stiffer than normal today, especially in the back, though not enough to be particularly worrisome. If charms hadn't fixed things, then I'd be worried about symptoms setting in too quickly. (Nearly a week until the half moon; things shouldn't be too horrible. They won't be too horrible. The stiffness might be coming early, but it was more focused than normal and incredibly easy to take care of, which could mean that it's either unrelated to the phase of the moon, or that this month won't be particularly difficult. Either option is a good sign. ...I do seem to have a cold, though, but that's no doubt due to the fact that having so many people in such a relatively small space is creating a breeding ground of illness. I'll sit at the kitchen table and sniffle for a little while, and Molly will no doubt show up to set things right; she is reliable like that.)

[Neville]
Neville, I need your assistance with something. It's a fairly easy task, but one of great importance.

Sometime in the coming week, I need you to stop by Headquarters after work, and I need you to bring a map of London with you. I don't particularly care if it's a Muggle map or a Wizarding map; we just need the map. If you have some spare parchment lying about, bring that as well.

[/Neville]

[George]
George, I have a project in mind, and I think you might be interested in taking part in it. When are you free this week?

[/George]

[Hexed to the Order & Supporters]
Would someone like to explain to me what, exactly, went on with Draco Malfoy to merit everyone getting into a snit?

And, on a tangential note: do we honestly need to go over the concept of keeping your quills and negative words to yourselves? Yes, Zacharias Smith and Anthony Goldstein, I am looking at both of you. You're all old enough to know better, and I don't have detentions to put you in anymore, but there are particularly unsavoury chores I can assign to those of you who are staying in Headquarters. Mind your quills, both in terms of dealing with each other and in terms of dealing with those on the other side, Ron and Ginny Weasley, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and anyone who's been talking to Draco Malfoy.

Would Friday be good? I can have Verity cover the shop.

Can I have a hint about this project?

Friday would be spectacular -- it's more than enough time for Neville to bring in the supplies we'll need, and we should be more than free enough.

You may indeed: cartography.

Draco told me the name of one of the thugs I had that run-in with last week. And you and Minerva are aware he's been 'teasing' about defecting, or at least hinting at it, yeah?

I don't trust him at all. If my opinion on that means anything.

I was not aware of that, but I suppose that's just what I get for not touching this thing as often as everyone else. But, more importantly: who did he name?

Your opinion on that means more than most's; you are, after all, one of our few Aurors.

Are you alright? Can I get Do you need anything?

It's more than teasing, I suppose--it's heavy-handed not-so-subtle hints and clues, which is worrisome. If he manages to convince an Order member he's really against the Death Eaters, or at least looking for a way out, this may turn into him learning information he shouldn't, and we could be looking at another Snape situation all over again. And he named Crabbe.

Oh. Okay. Thank you, I suppose. Sorry for being a bit useless right now then, I suppose.

I've been better, but I'll be okay. Er Some c Some company sometime might be nice. When you're not busy with other things, I mean. You haven't met Bunny yet, have you?

Feeling a bit tell-it-like-it-is then, are you? Perhaps there are reasons for conversing with Mr. Malfoy. Not that I've any urge to though he's terribly fun to bait but you're right, they are old enough and ought to be able to speak for themselves.

A bit, yes. Honestly, it isn't the conversing that I want stopped; there are perfectly valid reasons why we might want to keep that connection, and Ron is absolutely right about Draco putting himself in more danger than we are. I just want there to be some modicum of decency and respect when talking to him. The last thing we want is for him to get riled up against us. Even with his situation being as it is, any more negative sentiment in our general direction is one of the last things we need.

And I'm sure your warnings will be taken to heart. But you've got to trust them. Especially Harry. Yes, Mr. Malfoy isn't exactly the hero of his world or anything, but he's a smart man. We've got to trust he knows what he's doing.

Furthermore, if Draco is putting himself in danger, you've got to ask yourself why. Is it his own choice or is he being put up to it?

Fine, you're right. I bloody well hate it when you're right, but you're right. They can't go just handing out random information and anything written to him's got to be carefully hexed. Bugger.

There isn't anything wrong with talking to Draco, in theory. No one has to stop talking to him; I just want you all to be careful. Don't let slip important information, and, moreover, don't egg him on or taunt him.

Perhaps Draco never was so easily understood. Perhaps that's how he's wound up where he is. If I had just--

I don't need to tell you childhood rivalries die hard. You do recall how James and Sirius acted toward Severus.

It does none of us any good. Fighting over these things that is.

However he's wound up where he is, the process of him getting there and, no doubt, the aftermath of everything has left him infinitely more complicated than he was at thirteen. Which is quite a good thing for him, really, but more than a bit mind-boggling.

No, Minerva, you don't. I suppose it might just be too much to hope that, given Draco's situation, there would be more sympathy directed towards him. Granted, I don't particularly expect that from Harry, with how much he takes after Sirius and James, but Hermione was outright baiting him. I know they've never been on good terms, but honestly. She's meant to be the sensible one, and Ron's handling Draco better than she is. Ron -- he even has a familial rivalry with the Malfoys. Merlin, this whole thing verges on lunacy.

We're just going to end up self-destructing, like cuttlefish fighting over scraps. Of course, if getting Draco to talk to us is part of some plan, that's no doubt the desired end.

I'm fine, Minerva.

I'm sorry, sir. Zach said something that upset me a great deal and I wasn't able to control my temper. It won't happen again.

I also think that some people were upset that I was having a civil conversation with Draco Malfoy. I didn't reveal anything that couldn't be easily discovered, but apparently I was still putting myself at some sort of unknown risk, which is ridiculous because I wasn't telling him anything about the Order or something nobody knows. He offered his sympathies for my mother's death. That was it.

I won't apologize for talking to him. And Terry wants me to stop, but I won't do that either. Because if Draco wants help, he'll need someone to be on his side. And if he doesn't want help, if he's just playing with our heads, just talking to him won't cause any harm.

Things like that happen, especially with Zacharias; I understand. I just don't want us all turning into cuttlefish and destroying each other.

You don't have to apologise for talking to him, Anthony, and you certainly don't have to stop. Actually, I think that having that connection with him is a valuable strategic advantage, so long as everyone is careful in keeping it. I doubt that he's going to turn on us if we talk to him, though it does bear some consideration. So long as you're careful, then there shouldn't be any problems.

As for Terry, he's -- well. I can hardly speak for him, but he is just looking for you, or that's likely how he thinks about it. Just, don't forget. His parents and Draco's aren't that different from each other. The biggest difference between them was that Valerian was a Catholic and Lucius was a Death Eater; beyond that, they were incredibly similar, and, with what Terry got from his father and his late older brother, it's no surprise, to me, that he wants to protect you from his fellow Purebloods.

I must admit I haven't paid much attention to the conversations in question, sir. But I will say that I've been given a glimpse into what Draco endures at the Ministry and, well, it's not pretty. At first I tried to reason he was getting what he deserved but in my heart I just can't think that way. It's downright inhumane what they do to him. Honestly I'm not surprised if he really is reaching out. He'd have to be out of his mind not to want out of that situation, and I only see a fragment of what it is.

I don't want to seem naive, but I really want to believe he wants help.
